Filecoin introduced NFT.Storage

Filecoin presented on Thursday, April 29, through its Twitter account, NFT.Storage, the free decentralized storage for NFT.

“Today we are pleased to introduce NFT.Storage, a service supported by Protocol Labs and Pinata specifically for storing NFT data. NFT.Storage enables developers to protect their NFT assets and associated metadata through content routing and decentralized storage, ensuring that all NFTs follow best practices to remain accessible in the long term”, he said through an article published on their website.

Mikeal Rogers, Engineering Manager at Protocol Labs, said NFTs “are part of humanity’s cultural heritage, and designing their data to be accessible in the long term is crucial. Content routing and distributed storage networks ensure that digital artwork, basketball cards, and virtual real estate are guaranteed to remain safe and available for the long term. NFT.storage makes it completely easy to create NFTs following best practices through resilient persistence in IPFS and Filecoin”.

What is NFT.Storage?

According to the company, NFT.Storage enables developers to store NFT data on decentralized networks easily, securely, and free of charge. With just a few lines of code, anyone can harness the power of IPFS and Filecoin to ensure the persistence of their NFTs.

How does it work?

Filecoin detailed that the operation of these is:

• Content routing – After users upload data to NFT.Storage, they receive an IPFS hash of the content, known as a CID. CIDs are unique fingerprints of data, universal addresses that can be used to reference content regardless of how and where it is stored. Since CIDs are generated from the content itself, using CIDs to reference NFT data avoids problems such as brittle links and “carpet pulls.”

• Verifiable storage: NFT.Storage uses Filecoin for long-term decentralized data storage – brokering storage and retrieval agreements to preserve NFT data for the long term. Filecoin provides a permanence layer that uses cryptographic evidence to ensure the durability and persistence of NFT data over time.

• Resilient retrieval: This data stored via IPFS and Filecoin can be obtained directly in the browser through any public IPFS gateway.
